Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?
Corrie Ten Boom asked this potent question and it is truly something we as parents need to reflect.
We must teach our children to pray without ceasing
Besides teaching the Word, it is paramount that we help our children lead a prayerful life that, as Apostle Paul instructed us, “praying without ceasing” (I Thessalonians 5:17 KJV). And as Oswald Chambers reminded us, “Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer IS THE GREATER WORK.” Unfortunately, many of us see prayers as secondary. And our busy schedules prevent us to lead a prayerful life. Instead of praying without ceasing, we only pray when we are in trouble, or we pray only on Sundays. In turn, our children model after us and lead a lukewarm life without prayers and without God.
This kit aims to help our kids, teens and even ourselves cultivate a prayerful life. As you pray together with your children everyday, have them record down their own prayer requests and teach them to revisit their prayers over time and see how God is working in their life. Help them cultivate a habit to do daily prayers and devotion so that they may have a conversation with God continuously.
Prayer is communication with God.
The kit teaches children and teens the importance of prayers, and help them learn how to pray and communicate with God, and how they can pray throughout the day. To have an understanding of praying without ceasing, here’s a good video sermon by Pastor Rick Warren that I highly recommend.
Do it with them!
Finally, nothing beats doing it along with your children. Children learn best from example. Set aside time for prayers and devotions together with your children, set up your own prayer list and devotions. Share your prayer lists and heart desires and update one another how God has answered you. As you journey with your children, you will be learning with them, and know their heart desires.
